The gold $50 American Eagle coin depicts the Liberty design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the obverse and a "family of eagles" on the reverse. This beautiful series of coins was first started in 1986 and continues today. Coins are produced in both Proof and Uncirculated condition. (The proofs costing much more.) The mint made 4 different sizes, each having the same design. This coin is the one ounce size which is:

Over 350 years ago the 22 karat purity standard was established for circulating gold coinage. The United States government issued American Eagle gold coins follow this standard.
